Easy Mulled Wine Recipe and Clean Dessert Grazing Board for the Holidays

When I was living in New York, I discovered a magical elixir found only in winter time (and only in certain bars) called the mulled wine. I'm not much of a wino but mulled wine is a whole other thing.

Think winter spices: cloves, star anise, and cinnamon in deliciously hot burgundy coloured wine-- is it not heaven on earth? This year, I made it simple, no sugar added, and just for two.

You will need :

  • large pot
  • 4 oranges
  • bottle (750 mL) of inexpensive full-bodied red wine
  • 2-3 cinnamon sticks
  • 15-20 whole cloves
  • 2 star anise
  • 1/2 cup water
  1. Juice 3 oranges directly into pot
  2. Add 1/2 cup water, cinnamon sticks, and cloves
  3. bring to boil, then allow to simmer for 20 mins
  4. while waiting, cut the final orange into slices
  5. bring heat back up as if to boil and add entire contents of wine
  6. add star anise and orange slices. bring to boil
  7. turn off heat and serve in heated glasses

Yields 3-4 servings

It's so quick and fast because we don't want to overcook the wine and a good amount of spice for slower sipping.

Every Christmas at my in-laws, after a nice meal, there would always be nuts and dried fruit. Of course I would eat some of the heavier desserts (I do enjoy my pies) but the nuts and dried fruits would make me more satisfied faster. Here is my Sweetduet dessert grazing board inspiration:

This board includes:

  • mixed nuts
  • fruits: persimmon, mini apples, figs, raspberries
  • *Sprouts coconut rolls (*see note to vegans bottom of post)
  • Pineapple and Date Sweetduets

Oh yes, it was a delicious (and nutritious) dessert board.

A real quick final word if you're still reading this: I sincerely wish you a happy and healthy holidays. You are loved.

Love, Annie

*note to vegans: I regret to inform that these rolls have eggs in them. I was disappointed in my lack of thorough ingredient-checking. When I saw that they were made of coconuts, I got so excited. I assumed they were vegan because they were made of coconut flour!
